Between the Lines: Recognizing the Rhetoric of Generative AI
The More Human podcast, with Kathryn A. Broyles and Markus Gottschling
Recently, RhetAI Coalition members Kathryn A. Broyles and Marks Gottschling sat down with Mary Schwaber of the More Human podcast to discuss rhetorical persuasion and artificial intelligence. They discuss how AI persuades us through prompts, tone, and interface design—and what real “rhetorical literacy” looks like, tracing the stakes across politics, education, and mental‑health use. Give it a listen!
Kathryn A. Broyles is a Professor with the American Public University System. She holds a PhD in Composition & TESOL. She is co-chair of RhetAI’s ethics-of-persuasion working group, and she explores ethical frameworks at the intersection of rhetoric, technology, and human flourishing.
Markus Gottschling is Scientific Coordinator with the RHET AI Center at the University of Tübingen. He leads the “Communicative Competence” unit and co-organises the Persuasive Algorithms symposium. He researches how generative AI reshapes public discourse and warns against uncritical adoption of machine-generated texts.
